Age: Students entering 8th – completing 12th grades
Fee: $50 per teen (for uniform shirt, training, and recognition event)
Completed application, turned in no later than Wednesday, April 19.
2 recommendation forms from an unrelated adult, received no later than April 19.
Personal interview with Zoo Staff. During the interview you will need to give a talk that lasts at least 3 minutes on one of the following: a) the importance of conserving animal species or b) how you hope the zoo teen program will benefit your future goals.
Time Commitment: June 5-August 25. Teens are given an assigned schedule of 2-3 days per week.
Keepers: a minimum of 100 hours. If selected, mandatory training will be June 5 from 8:30-3:30.
Counselors: a minimum of 140 hours. If selected, mandatory training will be June 5-9 from 8:30-3 each day.
Zoo Teen Responsibilities:
Jr. Keeper: Work with the animal staff to complete their daily duties. This includes; raking, shoveling, hosing, feeding, doing dishes, bending, lifting and hauling. Jr. Keepers will work behind the scenes in close proximity to animals, but there will be little to no contact with the animals. Jr. Keepers will not work in cat or venomous reptile areas.
Jr. Counselor: Work with the education staff to put on Educational Summer Camps. Jr. Counselors will assist camp teachers in guiding the learning of campers through zoo tours, crafts and animal encounters. In addition, Jr. Counselors will learn how to handle and present certain education animals, both to campers and to members of the public.
There will be a parent meeting Tuesday, May 16 from 5:30-6:15. Zoo Teens selected for the program will be required to submit proof of a negative TB test by June 12.
April 19 – Application deadline
May 10 – Zoo Teens notified of acceptance or non-acceptance
May 16 – Parent orientation meeting from 5:30-6:15
June 5- Mandatory Training for Jr. Keepers from 8:30-3:30
June 5-9 – Mandatory training for Jr. Counselors from 8:30-3 each day
