Since its inception, Abilene Zoo has been a sought after WILD adventure in the community.
Continuing this legacy, A Bold Adventure features a multi-phase expansion that includes new habitats, species, conservation efforts, experiential dining, education classrooms, and the development of 22 untapped acres.
The first phase will completely transform the Africa region of the Abilene Zoo, creating immersive new habitats, unforgettable guest experiences, and vibrant gathering spaces designed to inspire the next generation of wildlife lovers. Phase One: Wild Encounters and Ferocious Eats is scheduled to open in late summer 2027!

The new rhino habitat will nearly quadruple in size, creating more space for the Zoo’s future crash of rhinos to roam, explore, and thrive. Guests will enjoy nearly 360-degree viewing opportunities with shaded areas designed for extended observation and connection.
For the first time in Zoo history, the Abilene Zoo will participate in eastern black rhino breeding efforts through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, supporting the conservation of this critically endangered species!
The giraffe habitat will expand into a multi-species savanna experience where compatible African species share the landscape alongside the giraffe herd.
Elevated boardwalks inspired by the Zoo’s historic giraffe bridge will bring guests eye-level with these incredible animals while creating immersive new viewing opportunities.

A new lion habitat will become a centerpiece of the expansion, featuring a one-of-a-kind C-130 Hercules aircraft installation honoring Abilene’s connection to Dyess Air Force Base and the military community.
Guests will experience up-close views of the pride from multiple vantage points while learning about lions and their role in the African ecosystem in the new mini amphitheater, perfect for educational presentations.
Leading toward the C-130 installation, the Walk of Honor will serve as a permanent tribute recognizing active-duty military, veterans, and retired military members. Guests will have the opportunity to reserve commemorative engraved bricks to honor loved ones, celebrate legacies, and become part of this meaningful space within the Zoo.
A brand-new two-story café overlooking the lion habitat will become a central gathering place within the Zoo. Guests will be able to relax, dine, and enjoy incredible views while remaining immersed in the experience of the Africa region.Â
The second floor will have amazing views of the zoo and will serve as a gathering space for small events.Â
The café will be connected to the elevated boardwalk!Â

Phase One will bring a new species to Abilene: the cheetah!
The new cheetah habitat will provide guests with a 360-degree viewing experience featuring an elevated boardwalk and multiple ground-level perspectives.Â
Designed to encourage movement and exploration, the habitat will create dynamic opportunities to observe one of Africa’s fastest predators!
Another new species coming to Abilene!
Guests will step into the world of meerkats through a playful and interactive habitat experience. Children will be able to navigate through tunnels and pop up into viewing bubbles located within the habitat, creating unforgettable up-close encounters with these curious and social animals.

Hyenas will join the Africa region in a new habitat designed to highlight their important role within African ecosystems; the elevated boardwalk will offer a great view of their habitat.
The habitat will offer guests new opportunities to learn about one of Africa’s most misunderstood predators.

New community gathering spaces will include an event lawn and amphitheater designed for educational programs, presentations, special events, and celebrations.
These spaces will allow the Zoo to host more engaging experiences for guests and the community throughout the year!
As part of A Bold Adventure, the Abilene Zoo is proud to introduce the Walk of Honor, a permanent tribute recognizing active-duty military, veterans, and retired military members who have served our country.
The Walk of Honor will lead guests toward the future C-130 Hercules installation within our new lion habitat, honoring Abilene’s deep connection to Dyess Air Force Base and the military community that has shaped our community.
Reserve a commemorative engraved brick to become part of this lasting tribute.
Bricks may honor a loved one, recognize military service, celebrate a family legacy, commemorate a special memory, or include a personal message that will remain part of the Zoo for generations to come.
