It is with deep sadness that the Abilene Zoo announces the devastating loss of our beloved baby giraffe, Zahara, who passed away the morning of October 2nd after suffering a severe leg fracture. The cause of the injury is undetermined. In the process of giving her emergency care and despite the strong efforts of our medical team, Zahara passed away.
Zahara, born on July 20th to parents Malaika and Congo, quickly captured the hearts of the zoo community and the public, who participated in voting for her name this summer. She was a precious member of our giraffe herd with her playful and spirited personality. Her growing bond with her family endeared her to all who met her. We know this news will be heartbreaking to the many who followed her journey from birth.
“We are devastated by this tragic loss,” said Robert Trejo, General Curator. “Zahara brought immense joy to our zoo family and the community. We appreciate the overwhelming support and love shown for Zahara since her birth, and our hearts go out to everyone who felt a connection to her, especially her primary zookeepers.”
As we mourn the loss of Zahara, we are reminded of the challenges that come with the care of such magnificent animals. The zoo will continue to monitor the remaining members of the giraffe herd, ensuring their safety and health.
