feed our browsers!

Many of our animals, including giraffes, bongo, addax and rhino, rely on “browse” —the tender shoots, twigs, and green leaves of trees and shrubs— for their daily diet. Browse not only provide essential nutrients but also serve as a natural enrichment, promoting the health and well-being of our animals by stimulating natural behaviors.

How to feed your animal friends?

We’re reaching out to the community to help us supply fresh browse for our animals. If you have recently trimmed your trees or done landscaping, we would greatly appreciate your donations of these tender branches and leaves. You can directly impact the care and enrichment of our zoo residents.

FAQ

Where can I drop-off my branches?

When you enter Abilene Zoo parking lot, follow the signs on the left fence until you reach to Gate C at Abilene Zoo.

Unfortunately, no. We only receive drop-off branches directly in Abilene Zoo, Gate C.

We recommend the following:
– Visiting Texas A&M Forest Service Tree ID: http://texastreeid.tamu.edu/content/idByLeaf/
– Arbor Day Tree ID: https://www.arborday.org/trees/index-identification.cfm
– Using Google Lens to identify plants

If you still are not able to ID your tree, please send a high resolution photo to abilene.zoo@abilenetx.gov.

We only accept fresh branches with green leaves.

Fresh cut branches that are five to eight feet in length, with a good amount of green leaves are preferred.

Pesticides are harmful to the animals. We don’t accept branches that have been treated with a pesticide.
