Abilene, TX—Abilene Zoo is saddened to announce the death of Makena, a one-year-and-ten-month-old female giraffe. Makena passed away unexpectedly from natural causes during the early morning hours on Monday, April 8th.
Makena was born in June 2022, at Abilene Zoo and was the third calf born to her mother, Jamie (12), and father, Congo (8). Makena grew up with a half sibling, born just two months later. The duo delighted visitors with their energy and playful games displayed among the giraffe herd.
While the cause of Makena’s death is unknown, a full necropsy has been performed, and staff are waiting on the final results.
“Makena was a shyer giraffe – a wallflower,” said Philip Nigro, Animal Care Supervisor. “She rarely ventured up to the feeding deck, so when she did, it was a real treat for our visitors. Her sweet nature made her a favorite among the keepers.”
Abilene Zoo is grateful to the community that shared in the joy that Makena brought during her life and is thankful for their thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.
