Abilene Zoo Mourns the Passing of Beloved 25-year-old Giraffe, Punk

It is with deep sadness that Abilene Zoo announces the passing of Punk, a giraffe cherished deeply by zoo staff and the community. Punk, a 25-year-old female giraffe, was humanely euthanized on March 26, 2025, due to age-related mobility issues.

Born on November 27, 1999, at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Punk arrived at the Abilene Zoo on May 27, 2003, quickly becoming a beloved member of the zoo family. For over two decades, Punk delighted thousands of visitors and helped foster connections between the community and wildlife.

Six months ago, Punk began showing signs of age-related mobility issues. The Abilene Zoo’s animal care and vet teams developed a treatment plan, including physical therapy and medication, ensuring Punk remained comfortable and active. Recently, her mobility significantly declined, severely impacting her quality of life. The veterinary team made the difficult and compassionate decision to humanly euthanize her.

“Punk had an exceptionally long and meaningful life, which is a testament to the incredible care provided by our team” shared Jesse Pottebaum, Abilene Zoo director. “She inspired generations of visitors, helped create lasting memories, and showed our zoo’s commitment to wildlife and conservation. Saying goodbye is deeply difficult, but we’re grateful for every moment she shared with us.”

Throughout her remarkably long life, Punk mothered two calves and was the proud grandmother of seven. Punk’s passing marks the end of an era, as she was one of the original giraffes who greeted visitors during the days of the zoo’s iconic bridge. She leaves behind a lasting legacy of education, conservation, and community connection.

Abilene Zoo invites the community to honor and celebrate Punk’s life by sharing their fond memories, stories, and photos in her honor. We thank the public for their support during this difficult time as we come together to mourn the loss of a beloved giraffe.
