Giraffe Habitat Expansion and Multi-Species Yard

Giraffe Habitat Expansion and Multi-Species Yard

4

Giraffes have always been an integral part of Abilene Zoo. In nearly every one of the Abilene Zoo’s logos, a giraffe is present in some way. Within the zoo itself, up until the 2010’s, the giraffe habitat featured a bridge where guests could get up close to some of our zoo’s most beloved animals.

In 2016, the iconic bridge of the Giraffe Safari region of the zoo was replaced by Twiga Terrace, giving guests a safer, more robust interactive giraffe experience by having the opportunity to feed a giraffe.

As a part of A Bold Adventure, the bridge is making a return in a new way! Snaking through the giraffe’s extended habitat will be the southern end of the elevated boardwalk. The deck will rise over the habitat, allowing for a face-to-face view of the world’s tallest land mammals. Guests will once again be able to see giraffes, other species, and much of the zoo from a giraffe’s perspective.

The giraffe’s habitat itself will also receive a significant upgrade. Along with a larger, longer barn, the area will be extended further into the Africa region, and portions of it will be converted into a multi-species habitat.

Animals like warthogs, ostriches, and antelope species will inhabit the yard alongside the giraffes. These shorter animals will have access underneath the boardwalk and will be able to venture through to an area exclusive to these smaller species. Guests not on the boardwalk will also be able to see these animals in their habitat.

Up until recently, all giraffes have been considered as one species. As of 2025, the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) recognized four different species of giraffes, with 3 of them considered to have vulnerable or endangered populations. Now with more habitat, a larger barn, and flexible herd rotations, the giraffe population at Abilene Zoo is set to grow.

This will be an important step forward for giraffe conservation and for the vitality of the Abilene Zoo herd. While giraffes may seem abundant, their populations have declined by 30% over the last three decades due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Conservationists often refer to this decline as a “silent extinction” because it is happening largely outside of the public spotlight. Through participation in the AZA’s Species Survival Plan, the Abilene Zoo plays an important role in maintaining a healthy, genetically diverse giraffe population and supporting the future of the species.

Conservation begins with connection. Every guest who feeds a giraffe, books an up-close tour, or learns more about giraffes’ current conservation status, becomes a part of the effort to protect them. World Giraffe Day is an international celebration dedicated to the world’s tallest mammal, the Abilene Zoo will be having World Giraffe Day Festival on Saturday, June 20th to celebrate giraffes with multiple activities. Proceeds from this event will go directly to support conservation. You can find more information at https://abilenezoo.org/events/world-giraffe-day/

Your support will help bring A Bold Adventure to life and ensure that we continue to inspire meaningful connections with wildlife for generations to come.
